28 Sep European Day of Languages
Pupils in Ulidia celebrated the annual European Day of Languages on Wednesday 26th September with a variety of activities. The day began with our daily staff briefing in French. Form classes were shown some familiar faces of celebrities who enjoy showing off their language skills. For example, we discovered that Gwyneth Paltrow is fluent in Spanish, and Sandra Bullock is fluent in German.
Year 9 French classes focussed on the origins and development of language, where we ‘borrow’ words from various languages in every day conversation. We took inspiration from the likes of Nelson Mandela, Dame Ellen McArthur and Paula Radcliffe who have all recognised their language learning as a valuable asset in contributing to their respective successes.
Year 8 students learned greetings in several European Languages, and then had the opportunity to learn from each other as they shared their knowledge amongst their classes. In year 11 we developed speaking skills in French with practising some tongue twisters.
We in the Languages Department are hoping to go bigger and better next year, so watch this space!
