18 Jun Celebration of Young Environmental Leadership
The College’s Eco Club has met for the final time this year to celebrate the year’s achievements. This year has been another successful year for the group with highlights including: attending and speaking at the Coast Care Awards in Stormont, being awarded for a second time as Ambassador Eco School for Northern Ireland, and being awarded first in both senior and junior categories of Young Reporters for the Environment. Also receiving an honourable mention from international jury of Young Reporters International, not to mention the fun we had working with BBC school report and the many (fair trade) treats that we have enjoyed along the way!
This year the group have been working with Shanna Rice from the Ulster Wildlife Trust to complete their Young Environmental Leader Awards. During the final meeting of this academic year three levels of awards were distributed to club members; leader, champion, and hero. Photographed are some of the recipients of the awards. A group of four pupils were also awarded reusable spring cups for their litter picking efforts this year.
Kyna Ku was awarded and presented with the AES Young Environmental Leader of the Year award by AES and Ulster Wildlife Trust.
A group of pupils were nominated by Mrs Patterson for a prize to mark their excellent effort when researching and writing articles about plastic waste; this group received a book about reducing single use plastics from the Ulster Wildlife Trust.
What a busy year it has been, Mrs Patterson would like to thank all those who attended the Eco Team this year for their hard work and enthusiasm, and also parent Neil McMullan for volunteering to help out again this year. A big thank you also to Mr McMahon and Mr McGuinness for their support and commitment to the group this academic year.
