15 Jan Ulidia Celebrates Success At Annual Speech And Prize Day
Thursday 18 December 2014 marked the official date for Ulidia Integrated College’s Annual Speech and Prize Day. Staff and pupils joined the Prize Winners in the Hall to share in the success and achievements of pupils for the year 2013/2014.
This year we celebrated prize day with a difference as guest speaker; Miss Tuesday Howe, a past pupil and previous Head Prefect of the College was formally invited to join the Board of Governors in the official presentations. Miss Howe spoke passionately about her experiences as a pupil of Ulidia Integrated College and how she had been inspired to study English at Queen’s University, achieving an Honours Degree in English. She also shared how her experience as a mentor in Ulidia motivated her to apply and become the Lead Mentor for first year English students at Queen’s University. In addition to her honours degree, Miss Howe also achieved a Degree Plus, which is achieved through volunteering opportunities, recognising contribution to extra curricular activities outside of the academic degree course. Miss Howe was honoured to share her experiences and inspiration and love of literacy with the pupils, staff and Board of Governors of Ulidia Integrated College.
Ulidia Integrated College offers a wide range of subjects to meet the needs of its pupils. Awards and Trophies were presented for GCSEs, A Levels and Attendance as well as creative arts, music, sport and Duke of Edinburgh. Pupils were also recognised for their outstanding contributions to the ethos of the school and their commitment to school life.
A special mention should go to the following pupils who have excelled academically through extra-curricular activities:
Matthew Devlin, who was awarded the Conduct Cup for the student who best personifies the student constitution. Matthew was identified by staff as a pupil who always shows respect, tries his best, has excellent attendance and always displays a warm and positive manner both in and out of school.
Danny Magill was presented a new award for 2013/14, the Jay Cullen Memorial Shield for the student who has shown outstanding contributions to mentoring younger students. Danny was selected by his Year 8 mentees as he is always ready to listen and displays a friendly, happy and helpful manner.
The Academic Cup for overall best academic performance went to Year 10 pupil, Jonathan Armstrong and senior pupil, Matthew Dineen, who achieved three A grades and one C grade at AS level in 2013/2014.
The ECO team were also highly commended and awarded the Ulidia Cup for excellence for their contributions to the Zero Waste Campaign which allowed Ulidia Integrated College to maintain its ‘Green Flag’ status as an Eco School for the third time. These pupils also represented Ulster in the ECO-UNESCO all Ireland Finals of the Young Environmentalist of the Year competition.
Finally, the Principal and staff of Ulidia Integrated College would like to thank our Head Prefect of 2013-2014, Andrew Wallace for his dedication and commitment to school life.
